Bridging the Gap in Education

Are students truly learning—or just memorizing to pass exams?

Education in Africa faces a unique challenge: students often rely on rote memorization rather than deep understanding due to limited access to quality teaching resources. With millions of learners spread across diverse regions, traditional classroom models struggle to scale.

Digital education is stepping in to fill the gap, and the e-learning market in Africa is on a rapid rise—projected to grow from $2 billion in 2020 to over $8 billion by 2027. The demand for accessible, engaging, and curriculum-aligned learning solutions has never been greater.

The Backstory and opportunity

Sim Shagaya, a seasoned Nigerian entrepreneur, founded uLesson in 2019 to tackle the educational challenges faced by African students. His inspiration stemmed from a desire to democratize access to quality education across the continent. Drawing on his extensive experience in media and technology, Shagaya envisioned a platform that would provide high-quality learning materials in an affordable and accessible way for African learners.

He identified several critical gaps in Africa’s education system that hindered effective learning:

  • Limited Access to Quality Education – Many students, especially in remote and underserved areas, struggle to access high-quality educational resources and skilled teachers.
  • Shortage of Qualified Educators – The availability of well-trained teachers is inconsistent, leading to disparities in learning experiences across different regions.
  • Heavy Reliance on Rote Memorization – Traditional teaching methods often focus on memorization rather than conceptual understanding, limiting students’ ability to apply knowledge in real-world scenarios.
  • Lack of Engagement in Learning – Many students find conventional classroom lessons unengaging, making it difficult to retain information and stay motivated.
  • Challenges with Internet Connectivity – Limited and unreliable internet access in many parts of Africa restricts students from utilizing digital learning resources effectively.
  • High Cost of Quality Education – Private schools and tutoring services that offer better learning experiences remain unaffordable for a large portion of the population, widening the education gap.

The Product

uLesson distinguishes itself in the African ed-tech space by offering a suite of innovative features and products tailored to the unique needs of students and educators across the continent.

  1. Comprehensive Curriculum-Aligned Content:
uLesson provides an extensive library of over 7,000 educational videos and 50,000 assessment items, including quizzes, tests, and exams. These resources are meticulously aligned with national curricula, ensuring that students receive relevant and standardized instruction.
  2. Interactive Smart Classroom Solutions:
The uLesson Classboard is a 65-inch interactive smartboard designed to transform traditional classrooms into dynamic learning environments. Key specifications include:
    • Display: 65-inch 4K resolution with a 178° viewing angle, ensuring clear visuals from any part of the classroom.
    • Touch Technology: Multi-touch capabilities allow for interactive lessons, enabling both teachers and students to engage directly with the content.
    • Pre-installed Content: Thousands of curriculum-aligned video lessons and teaching resources are readily available, reducing preparation time for educators.
  3. Dedicated Educational Tablets
uLesson offers educational tablets pre-loaded with quality academic video content, specifically designed to enhance learning for primary and secondary school students. These tablets provide a portable and accessible means for students to engage with educational materials, even in areas with limited internet connectivity.
  4. Accessibility Without Internet Connectivity
A key differentiator for uLesson is its ability to function offline. Students can download lessons, quizzes, and study materials in advance, allowing them to continue learning without an active internet connection. This is particularly beneficial for students in regions where internet access is unreliable or expensive, ensuring that learning is not disrupted by connectivity issues.
  5. Live Lessons and Homework Help
To complement its rich library of pre-recorded content, uLesson offers live lessons where students can interact in real-time with expert tutors. Additionally, the Homework Help feature connects learners with tutors from universities, providing personalized assistance and fostering a deeper understanding of complex subjects.
  6. Coding Classes through DevKids
Recognizing the growing importance of digital skills, uLesson introduced DevKids, a coding class initiative that operates independently from the core platform. DevKids offers one-on-one live coding classes, equipping students with essential programming skills and preparing them for future opportunities in technology.
