The Sharing Economy Reimagined

What if you could rent anything you need, anytime you need it, without the commitment of ownership?

The sharing economy has changed how we think about access versus ownership. From Airbnb changing how we think about travel to Turo changing car rentals, peer-to-peer platforms have proven that people are ready to take on a more sustainable, cost-effective way of consuming. Yet for everyday items like cameras, power tools, outdoor gear, electronics, and party equipment, there was still a gap in the market.

Lendr set out to fill that gap. Positioning itself as "Airbnb for everything else," Lendr created a community-driven marketplace where people could rent out their underutilized belongings and renters could access what they needed without the burden of ownership. With $1 million in insurance protection, verified renters, and industry-low 5% transaction fees, Lendr promised to make peer-to-peer rentals safe, simple, and profitable. But turning that vision into reality required more than just an idea. It required a feature-rich platform that could handle the complexities of modern marketplace dynamics while remaining intuitive enough for everyday users.

The opportunity

The story of Lendr began when Narcis Baraiac, fresh from his experience at StockX where he'd witnessed firsthand how technology could transform peer-to-peer marketplaces, started noticing a gap in the market. While researching online rental platforms with his co-founder Samuel Herman, they saw a familiar pattern: the sharing economy was booming, but most platforms were either overcomplicated enterprise solutions or bare-bones Craigslist-style listings that offered little protection or trust.

Narcis had overcome significant personal struggles to reach this point, including a devastating accident in October of 2021 that nearly cost him his right eye, challenges that would have derailed most people. But he'd persevered, and now he was finally in a position to build something meaningful. From someone lending out their power drill for the weekend to businesses managing entire rental inventories, everyone deserved a professional, trustworthy platform. They built an initial version and launched to validate their concept. The early platform proved people wanted what Lendr was offering, and they gained traction. But here's where things got complicated.

When Lendr approached Roro, they were dealing with the aftermath of a development partnership that had fallen short. Their previous agency had delivered a functional mobile app, sure but it was essentially a dressed-up listing board with payment processing tacked on. It worked for basic transactions, but it was nowhere near what Narcis and Samuel had envisioned.

The gap between what they had and what they needed was significant. The platform was missing critical features that any serious marketplace requires:

  • Business account functionality
  • Promotional code system
  • Review mechanisms
  • Insurance options for high-value rentals
  • Search capabilities
  • Single-category product listings
  • Analytics for business users
  • Web presence

For a peer-to-peer marketplace where users might rent thousands of dollars worth of equipment, these weren't just missing features, they were deal-breakers. Business users, who represented their best revenue opportunity, had no way to run promotions, track performance, or properly manage their inventory. Individual users lacked the trust signals: reviews, insurance, verification that make people comfortable renting expensive items from strangers.

The challenge was clear: rebuild and expand the platform while maintaining the core experience that early users had come to expect, and do it right this time.

The Product

Lendr is a peer-to-peer sharing marketplace that connects people who have items to lend with those who need them. The platform facilitates secure transactions across 25+ categories, from cameras and electronics to tools and party equipment, all backed by comprehensive insurance protection and verified user profiles. The platform operates on a simple premise: make renting as easy as shopping online, but with the personal touch of community-driven commerce. Users can browse available items, book them for specific dates, arrange pickup or delivery, and return them when done, and secure payment processing through Stripe. For lenders, the platform offers an opportunity to monetize underutilized assets. That professional camera sitting unused 90% of the time? List it on Lendr. Those power tools gathering dust in the garage? They could be generating passive income. Free listing, low transaction fees (just 5%), and automated payment processing make it attractive for both casual lenders and businesses looking to scale their rental operations.

Our Contribution

We didn't just fix what was broken. We reimagined what Lendr could be.

Over our engagement, we completely transformed the platform, taking it from a basic rental app to a sophisticated marketplace ecosystem. Here's how we did it:

  1. Comprehensive Platform Rebuild: We rebuilt Lendr across three platforms: iOS, Android, and web. Using Flutter for mobile development, we made sure there was consistency across both mobile platforms while allowing for rapid feature deployment. For the backend, we leveraged Laravel Framework to create a robust, scalable infrastructure. The web application, built with Next.js, extended Lendr's reach beyond mobile, opening up new user acquisition channels.
  2. Business Account Infrastructure: One of the most significant additions was the introduction of business accounts. This wasn't just about adding a new user type. It required building an entire ecosystem within the app:
    • Analytics Dashboard: Business users can now track their performance in real time. They see rental counts, revenue trends over the past week, top-performing products, and user engagement metrics. This data-driven approach helps businesses optimize their inventory and pricing strategies.
    • Custom Promotional Codes: Businesses can create their own discount codes, run seasonal promotions, and incentivize repeat customers. The system tracks redemption rates and ties them back to revenue metrics in the analytics dashboard.

  • Advertising Capabilities: Business accounts can now promote their listings within the app, gaining visibility in search results and category pages. This created a new revenue stream for Lendr while helping businesses grow their rental operations.‍
  • Dedicated Onboarding: We implemented a business account request system where interested users can apply for business status. The admin panel allows Lendr's team to review applications and approve qualified businesses, ensuring quality control.
  1. Trust and Safety Features: For a peer-to-peer marketplace to thrive, trust is everything. We implemented several key features to build that trust:
    • Comprehensive Review System: We built a dual-sided review system where renters can review products and owners can review renters. This creates accountability on both sides of the transaction and helps users make informed decisions.‍
    • Insurance Integration: High-value rentals needed protection. We integrated insurance options directly into the booking flow, giving users peace of mind when renting expensive equipment. This feature alone significantly increased conversion rates for premium listings.
    • User Verification: We enhanced the verification system to ensure all users are authenticated, creating a safer environment for transactions.‍User Verification: We enhanced the verification system to ensure all users are authenticated, creating a safer environment for transactions.

  1. Search and Discovery: Finding the right item at the right time is crucial for any marketplace. We overhauled the search experience:
    • Live Search: Instead of requiring users to hit enter and wait for results, our live search displays matching items as users type. esults show both the item name and its category, making discovery intuitive and fast.
    • Multi-Category Support: Products can now belong to multiple categories. A professional camera might appear in both Photography Equipment and Content Creation Tools, increasing discoverability and rental opportunities.
    • Advanced Filtering: Users can filter by price range, availability dates, location proximity, and ratings, making it easy to find exactly what they need.
  2. Referral System: Word-of-mouth is powerful in community-driven platforms. We implemented a referral system that rewards users with $20 in wallet credit for each friend they invite who completes a rental. This gamification encouraged organic growth and rewarded early adopters for spreading the word.
  3. Admin Control Center: Behind every great marketplace is a powerful admin system. We built a comprehensive admin panel that gives Lendr's team complete control:
    • Monitor all user activity and transactions
    • Review and approve business account applications
    • Manage product listings and remove prohibited items
    • Handle user-reported issues and disputes
    • Control product visibility (new listings require admin approval)
    • Access comprehensive analytics on platform usage
    • Process support tickets and user reports

  1. Web Platform Expansion: Perhaps one of our most ambitious additions was developing a complete web application. Lendr started as a mobile-only platform, limiting its reach. The web app we built clones the mobile experience while optimizing for desktop workflows, making it easier for business users to manage multiple listings and for renters to browse inventory on larger screens.

Our Partnership With lendr

Lendr came to us with a foundation. We helped them build an ecosystem.
Over the course of our partnership, we transformed Lendr from a basic rental app into a sophisticated peer-to-peer marketplace, rebuilt from the ground up across iOS, Android, and web. We modernized every layer of the product while keeping scalability at the center of every decision.

Here’s what Narcis Baraiac has to say about our partnership -
quoWhat stood out most was that they weren't just executing tasks — they consistently considered how changes affected security, user confidence, and long-term scalability. That product-level thinking, combined with strong execution and design sensibility, made them feel more like an embedded partner than an external vendor quo
